Supes on: the budget — ‘There needs to be more dialogue,’ says Maxwell

Sophie Maxwell praises the health department for efficiency and calls the budget policy debate "healthy."

“The police, that’s the end. Public safety starts in the middle. Public safety starts with education. Public safety starts with health … by the time they get to the police we have failed them."

Maxwell is in her third term as District 10 Supervisor. Her district includes, among others, the Potrero Hill, Bayview Hunters Point and Portola districts.

She recently sat down with The Public Press to discuss her wide view of public safety and budget reform options. She supports instituting a two-year budget cycle and having a “discussion” around mid-year cuts between Mayor Gavin Newsom and the board.

“There needs to be more dialogue,” Maxwell said. Further, after saying the San Francisco budget “has never been this bad,” Maxwell said it is in the mayor’s best interest to converse with the board.
