Yerba Buena Island and Treasure Island were active military installations. Today, a lot of the land is used for sporting events. Photo by Monica Jensen/SF Public Press.

Treasure Island, named for the imagined gold embedded in the mud dredged from the Sacramento Delta to build the manmade island, offers an oasis for some in the middle of San Francisco Bay. Yerba Buena Island, to the east, has sweeping views of the East Bay.

Lacrosse, Little League baseball and rugby tournaments are just a few of the sporting events held on the numerous manicured fields on Treasure Island.

While the bulk of the island is flat, there are plans to redevelop the land. Development could cost up to $1.46 billion, according to a recent San Francisco Examiner article. The majority of the island facing Oakland will remain public open space.
