Sit/lie ban is approved by voters

San Francisco voters have approved an initiative making it illegal to sit or lie on the sidewalk.

Measure L, known as the "sit/lie" ordinance, would ban any sitting or lying on San Francisco sidewalks between the hours of 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., according to CBS San Francisco.

The new law requires police officers to issue warnings first before citing anyone, but repeat offenders may face jail time and a $500 fine.

Supporters of the measure, including Mayor Gavin Newsom and Police Chief George Gascón, said the ban will give officers another tool to keep people from blocking sidewalks and intimidating passers-by, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Opponents say it discriminates against day laborers, the homeless and others.

A competing ordinance, Measure M, which would have made police foot-patrol programs mandatory and canceled Measure L if both passed, was rejected by voters, according to the Chronicle.
