Alexandria Theater Site Could Get New Life

The dilapidated Alexandria Theater might actually get renovated by early next year, saving at least the facade of the Richmond District landmark. But the new building would not look much its predecessor on the inside, with entertainment giving way to needed housing and retail.

Athletes vie with birds in Golden Gate Park’s environmental turf war

A swath of ground at the western end of Golden Gate Park has stirred debate among soccer players, neighborhood residents, astronomers and environmentalists. The disputed turf is the Beach Chalet Soccer Fields. A plan to replace the grass surface with artificial turf has been put on hold by the Recreation and Park Commission which has ordered an environmental impact report on the project.

The Richmond and Sunset districts are the largest neighborhoods in San Francisco. They sit side by side and mirror each other through Golden Gate Park, butting up against the city’s beachfront. Hidden within a vast grid of residential space are areas where one can only trek to or be aware of if driven to. Or if a Muni line transects it.

News Notes: Town hall scheduled tonight to discuss Richmond district bus, pedestrian improvements

Residents, merchants and those anxious over the transformation of one of San Francisco’s most traveled corridors will have a chance to voice their concerns at tonight’s discussion of the Geary Bus Rapid Transit system.

Co-hosted by Supervisor Eric Mar and the San Francisco County Transportation Authority, the meeting will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Richmond Recreation Center, 251 18th Ave. The forum also will address pedestrian and street improvements included in the project.
