PG&E says it has identified the cause of the huge vault fire last month that occurred at the corner of Polk and O’Farrell in the Tenderloin district.

An investigation by the electricity provider revealed that a copper wire in the vault melted and ignited another cable, though why it melted remains a mystery.

The fire knocked out power to 8,600 PG&E customers, and the intersection was shut down for several days.
