According to the Urban Mobility Report, Bay Area commuters spend 50 hours a year stuck in traffic.

The San Francisco — Oakland and San Jose areas rank amongst the most delayed regions in the country, according to the report produced using data from the Federal Highways Commission.

Despite these high statistics, numbers are going down. In 2007, figures showed commuters in the San Francisco –- Oakland area spent an average of 55 hours in traffic. Nevertheless, the report shows the Bay Area still has a long way to go before it reaches the national average of 36 hours a year.

Fears are growing that the problem could get much worse should the imminent BART strikes go ahead, and an estimated 130,000 people are forced to find alternative means of transport.
