Tom Honig has been a journalist for 41 years. Originally a sportswriter, he joined the Santa Cruz Sentinel in 1972 as a police reporter. During the next decade, he covered every news beat at the newspaper, specializing in politics, government and general news. In 1985, he became the newspaper's city editor, supervising a staff of 11 reporters. In 1991, he was named managing editor, and became chief editor and editorial writer in 1992. He retired from the position of editor in 2007. Since then he has continued his work as a freelance journalist and has expanded into the fields of public relations and new media. He has been involved in the San Francisco Public Press since 2007, and serves on the Board of Directors.
